My name is Klaus Vollrath. I grew up in multilingual Luxembourg and finished my studies at the RWTH Aachen University with the degree of a Dipl.-Eng. in physical metallurgy. The first stages in my career were seven years as a researcher at the Technical University in Munich and in the R&D department of the foundry division of the Thyssen Group. When Thyssen closed this research department, I started up my own computer engineering services, providing hardware and software solutions for business applications. I sold this business six years later and joined a producer of sophisticated CNC-controlled equipment for the automation of die-casting plants, with responsibility for customer support and sales for the north-western part of Germany, together with France, Great Britain, the Benelux countries and Scandinavia. In April 1994 I accepted an invitation to become managing editor of the engineering and scientific journals of the German Foundrymen's Association (VDG). Since autumn 1997 I have been working as a free-lance journalist.
My activities in this field are furthered by the multilingualism I was able to acquire during my early youth and adolescence. I can easily switch between German, English and French and, for example, produce a German article from an interview with a Frenchman without having to go through a transitional stage. Wherever possible I translate my articles myself and have them cross-checked by a native-speaking professional. This ensures the correct use of specialist terms as well as linguistic quality.
